RabbiBenson

Rabbi Aaron Benson, his wife Isabel Smith, and sons Montgomery, Redford, and Pierce are happy to be a part of the NSJC family.
Since coming to North Shore Jewish Center, Rabbi Benson has enjoyed teaching the synagogue’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah class, numerous adult education offerings, and getting to know the members of the community. He is also learning to cultivate a connection to his wife’s family heritage as Mets fans.
In our larger community, he is a member of the Three Village Clergy Council, has been appointed to serve as the New York Board of Rabbis’ chaplain to Mather and St. Charles Hospitals in Port Jefferson, is vice-president of the Suffolk Board of Rabbis, and worked on the programming committee of the new Eastern Long Island Jewish Alliance (ELIJA) in creating its Lag b’Omer festival, a community-wide program that attracted over one thousand people to celebrate Jewish life in Suffolk County.
Rabbi Benson is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was ordained by the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the American Jewish University in 2003.
From the time of his ordination until 2008, and again from 2011 to 2013, he served as rabbi of Congregation Beth Meier, where he had also been a rabbinic intern. During his years in Los Angeles Rabbi Benson was an instructor for the Miller Introduction to Judaism Program at the American Jewish University, served as the Recording Secretary for the Rabbinical Assembly’s Pacific Southwest Region Executive Board, and participated in a two-year course for rabbis offered by the Mussar Leadership Program of Philadelphia.
From 2008 to 2011 he was rabbi of the East Brunswick Jewish Center, in East Brunswick, New Jersey. While there he served as head of the Rabbinic Advisory Cabinet of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley as well as serving as a trustee for the New Jersey Region of the Rabbinical Assembly. Rabbi Benson also taught in the Interfaith & Conversion Outreach Education Program of the New Jersey Rabbinical Assembly. He was active in the East Brunswick Interfaith Clergy Council and was an appointee to the Mayor of East Brunswick’s Ethics Committee. He also served as a chaplain for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
A story of his, “The Blankets,” was published in Jewish Stories from Heaven and Earth: Inspiring Tales to Nourish the Heart and Soul, an anthology compiled by Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins.
